Causes of deafness and hearing loss

Jan 06, 2025

.Genetic factors: Hereditary hearing loss can be congenital or gradually develop after birth. This may involve genetic mutations or chromosomal abnormalities.

.Pregnancy factors: During pregnancy, the mother may be infected with viral diseases (such as rubella), toxic diseases, diabetes, nephritis, etc., or receive excessive X-ray radiation, which may lead to the development of the inner ear of the fetus, resulting in deafness.

.Postpartum factors: hypoxia caused by pregnancy toxemia, birth injury, placental abruption, umbilical cord entanglement around the neck, difficult delivery, as well as neonatal anemia, jaundice, etc., can all cause deafness.

.Trauma: Craniocerebral trauma and temporal bone fracture can damage the inner ear structure, leading to inner ear bleeding, or inner ear injury caused by strong shaking, all of which can cause sensorineural hearing loss.

.Drug poisoning: Aminoglycoside antibiotics (such as gentamicin, kanamycin, etc.), quinine, salicylic acid, cisplatin, and other drugs can cause sensorineural hearing loss. Ear medication poisoning is closely related to human susceptibility.

.Noise exposure: Long term exposure to noise levels above 85dB (A) can cause chronic sensorineural hearing loss.

.Viral infection: Various acute infectious diseases, such as Japanese encephalitis, mumps, purulent meningitis, as well as bacterial or viral infections, can damage the inner ear and cause sensorineural deafness.

.Senile degeneration: Elderly vascular sclerosis and bone hyperplasia can lead to insufficient blood supply to spiral hair cells and spiral ganglia, resulting in degenerative changes or central nervous system decline, which can lead to hearing loss.

.Disease factors: Ear diseases such as otitis media and acoustic neuroma are important causes of direct deafness or partial hearing loss. In addition, systemic diseases such as hypertension, arteriosclerosis and diabetes can also affect hearing.

.Other factors such as excessive stress, immune disorders, and poisoning from certain chemicals may also lead to deafness.
